I’ve been meaning to post a tutorial on how I usually do the kind of make-up that you see in my pictures because I’ve gotten so many requests from people, but for the longest time I’ve been contemplating whether or not I should do a video tutorial. I’m not an expert in make-up, and I only learned because of my vast collection of Japanese magazines (Popteen and ViVi have taught me so much – you have no idea), and because I picked some tricks up from make-up artists who have dolled me up for shoots in the past. Finally decided to just make a tutorial using photography, since I’m more comfortable in my own medium. I also make a lot of mistakes (cotton buds are my best friends when it comes to doing my own make-up) so I figured this would be a lot less stressful to make.
Anyhow, on to the tutorial! This is more or less how I do my make-up most of the time, with a few variations once in a while – I’d opt to not use pencil eyeliner on my bottom lashline and skip the false eyelashes on a normal, lazy day, and I’d use a better, darker eyeshadow color and highlight my brow bone if I had to go to an event or a party. I also have false bottom lashes for shoot purposes (they can get a little pricey especially Dolly Wink so I always save mine for special occasions).
Step 1: Apply eyeshadow primer. I’m using Urban Decay’s Primer Potion. This prevents your eye make-up from creasing or smearing.
Step 2: Apply a light shimmery eyeshadow on your lids. I’m using a shimmery white/gold from my Majolica Majorca palette.
Step 3: Eyeliner! This is the most important part of my make-up routine. I’m using Dolly Wink’s liquid eyeliner to create a defined wing. Normally, people would wing their eyeliner upwards, but I like winging my liner downwards for a more dolly look.
Step 4: From the inner corner of your eye, create a line using a pencil eyeliner and connect it to the end of the wing.
Step 5: Fill the spaces in using the same pencil eyeliner. I’m using Palty Glitter Pencil Eyeliner in Black.
Step 6: Apply mascara on your top…
Step 7: …and bottom lashes. I’m using Maybelline’s The Magnum Volum’ Express mascara. If I like volume, this is what I’d use. However, I also swear by Majolica Majorca’s Lash Expander Frame Plus for length.
Step 8: Line your waterline and the inner corners of your eye with a sparkly silver pencil liner. I’m using Palty Glitter Pencil Eyeliner in Silver. This will make your eyes bigger and more doll-like.
Step 9: Get some falsies and cut accordingly. I’m just recycling a pair of Sasa falsies that I wore yesterday. Make sure you clean them before re-using!
Step 10: Get some eyelash glue, stick your falsies as close to your lashline as possible and there you have it!
Products used: Etude House eyeshadow brush, Palty Glitter Pencil Liner in Silver and Black, Dolly Wink liquid eyeliner, Dolly Wink eyelash glue, Maybelline the Magnum mascara, Majolica Majorca Jeweling Eyes palette (I used the color on the upper right). Since I’m a huge fan of Japanese beauty products like Dolly Wink, Candy Doll, Palty, Canmake, Heavy Rotation, etc., I get most of my make-up from Sasa and Watsons stores in other Asian countries like Singapore, China, etc. I got my primer potion from Sephora in the US and in KL.
If you have any questions, feel free to comment on this entry. I might make more tutorials in the future so do let me know if you have any requests too. I can’t really do complicated tutorials with lots of colors and blending, but I’m all for ulzzang and gyaru-inspired ones. If anyone gets inspired by this, take a picture and let me see! Hope this tutorial helps. :)
